Tooth enamel is the incredibly hard substance that gives your teeth the integrity to chew and grind food. This durability is provided by an intricate network of microscopic mineral crystals. Over the course of a single day the pervasive bacteria in your mouth, as well as interaction with acidic foods and beverages you consume, can cause a minute erosion of these mineral crystals.

Left unchecked, this process known as demineralization can weaken your tooth enamel to the degree that tooth decay can set hold. At the same time demineralization also makes you more prone to develop tooth sensitivity issues.

Well-established research has found that regular exposure to fluoride helps to restore the mineral structures of tooth enamel in a process known as remineralization. If you show signs of unchecked demineralization, enamel erosion, tooth decay or sensitivity issues Dr. Joan M. Jupina might recommend a routine fluoride treatment to help restore the integrity of your tooth enamel.

To administer the fluoride treatment, Dr. Jupina  will pour a small amount of concentrated fluoride gel into trays that are held in your mouth for a few minutes. It’s a good idea to avoid eating or drinking for up to an hour afterward to allow the fluoride to deeply penetrate the microscopic areas of your tooth enamel.

Dr. Jupina might also prescribe fluoride supplements or advise you to use a toothpaste with added fluoride to help maintain the strength of your tooth enamel on a daily basis.
