Bridge Q & A

What’s a bridge?

Just as a bridge spans a river, a dental bridge spans the gap left by your missing tooth, using the teeth on opposite sides of the gap as stabilizers.

A porcelain dental bridge is made up of two crowns (tooth-shaped caps), which are attached on either side of one or more interconnected false teeth. The false tooth or teeth fill the gap left by your missing teeth, and the crowns secure the bridge to the supporting teeth.

What are the advantages of a bridge?

Dental bridges look, feel, and function like your natural teeth. Dr. Jupina takes care to match the color of your crowns and false teeth to your natural tooth shade.

Unlike dentures, dental bridges don’t have to be removed. In fact, they can stay in place for 10-15 years or more with proper care.

Another advantage they have unlike dentures is that they don’t slip out of place, hinder the kinds of foods you can eat, or need extra care. You clean your bridge along with the rest of your teeth during your twice-daily brushing routine.

Unlike dental implants, dental bridges don’t require oral surgery, and they’re less expensive than dental implants. They can restore your smile in a matter of weeks.

How do I get a bridge?

If you decide on a dental bridge, Dr. Jupina will first prepare your neighboring teeth to accept the crowns. She’ll gently file down a bit of your enamel so the crown will have enough space to fit on top of your tooth.

After she’s prepared your neighboring teeth, she’ll take impressions of those teeth, plus the space that will be filled. You’ll have a temporary crown while you wait for the laboratory to create your custom-designed bridge.

How long does it take to get a bridge?

Usually, it takes only about two weeks for the lab to finish your tailor-made bridge. Dr. Jupina will make sure it fits perfectly and then cement the bridge in place.
