Lumineers Q & A

What are Lumineers?

Lumineers are an ultra-thin (about 0.2 millimeters) form of dental veneers, which are tooth-shaped covers that are used to improve the look of one tooth, several teeth, or all of your teeth. They’re translucent enough to mimic the look of your enamel.

Dr. Jupina uses Lumineers to improve the look of teeth that are:

  • Crooked
  • Misaligned
  • Broken or chipped
  • Stained or discolored
  • Gapped or crowded
  • Uneven
  • Poorly shaped or small

Do my teeth need to be etched to get Lumineers?

Since Lumineers are thin, you don’t have to have any enamel removed from your teeth. That’s an advantage over traditional veneers, which are thicker and require that your teeth be etched to leave space for the shells.

If Dr. Jupina fits you for Lumineers, she’ll make molds of your teeth, and send that information to the lab.

In about two weeks, your custom-designed Lumineers will arrive. When they do, Dr. Jupina may have to etch your teeth very slightly to improve the bond between your teeth and the Lumineers. Or she may not have to etch your teeth at all.

Are Lumineers reversible?

Yes! Because your teeth won’t be etched significantly or damaged in any way, it’s perfectly safe to remove Lumineers. You can go back to your natural teeth, or choose a new look with a new set of Lumineers.

What are some other advantages of Lumineers?

Along with being reversible, Lumineers, compared to traditional veneers, are also:

  • Stronger
  • Longer lasting (20 years or more)
  • Faster to apply
  • Pain-free when applied (no shots are needed)
  • Highly translucent
  • Completely comfortable after the procedure

How should I treat my Lumineers?

You can treat your Lumineers just like your natural teeth: Eat anything you want; you can even chew gum.

Just be sure you maintain excellent oral health habits, including brushing at least twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and visiting Dr. Jupina and her team every six months for an exam and professional cleaning.
